Our farmhouse is situated in a rural nook of the eastern part of Westphalia on the outskirts of the village of Bühne (Buehne). We have two vacation apartments to offer. The apartments are one flight up and offer a view of our garden and grounds.
Each furnished apartment consists of a living room with complete kitchenette and seating arrangement, as well as a double bed alcove. There is also a small separate bedroom for one or two persons (One apartment has bunk beds). A crib is also available.
Garden, meadow and park-like trees surround our house. There are seating arrangements on the lawn and a barbeque corner.
Two Shetland ponies, waterfowl, a dog and several cats are resident on our property.
Our house is located in a 1300-soul village. Our property lies on the western perimeter of the village, but only a few steps from a bakery and butcher shop. Our butcher has quality meats from this region. Our baker bakes his bread and rolls as in the good old days.
Buehne (which is also the German word for “stage” as in “All the world’s a stage”) is located near the conjunction of the 3 states of Northrhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Lower Saxony, in the foothills of the rolling Weser mountains (Weserbergland).
In the river valleys to the east lie the Weser towns of Beverungen, Bad Karlshafen and the county seat, Höxter (Hoexter). The Forest of Reinhardwald ist near, and on the far side of the river are the Forests of Solling and Bramwald. There are excellent opportunities for hiking, riding and biking in the rolling mountains or valleys. The bicycle route “R6″ runs past our doorstep and leads to or from the popular north-south bicycle route “R 99″ in the Weser valley. All day scenic bicycle tours along both sides of the river are possible. Motorcyclists will find excellent opportunities for tours in the rolling hills and on winding roads.
The Weserberglandtherme located in Bad Karlshafen offers spa relaxation and/or swimming fun for the whole family. Hofgeismar has large indoor-outdoor swimming facilities. In the summertime the swimming pool in Borgentreich can be reached directly via the bicycle route R6.
A bit about the history of the village of Buehne and our house:
Buehne was first mentioned in a document in the year 890, when Count Cobbo received the “Koenigshof of Piun”, by which may be understood a building complex, with houses, inhabitants and livestock, as a gift from King Arnulf. The name of the nucleus of the village of Buehne was spelled Piun in those days. In the course of the 16th century, parts von Spiegel clan, the local nobles, who prior to that date had all lived in a castle built on the Desenberg, a long-extinct volcano some 10 km south of Bühne, resettled parts of the family in Buehne. The von Spiegels, who figured prominently in the region for many centuries, again split into several “houses”. Their places of residence in Buehne were called Burg Buehne, Klingenburger Hof or Kannenhof, Rotenburger Hof and Winterhof.
Our house and its grounds was initially part of the von Spiegel estates. In the year 1780, Franz Wilhelm von Spiegel, Canon in the Diocese of Hildesheim, ceded it over to Johann Heinrich Wendt, to whom he was indebted. Thus the name of our house Wendtshof. In this context the suffix “hof” means “farm”, which in English, would read “The Wendt Farm”.
